This Is Just Something I Noticed

Time moves slow - BADBADNOTGOOD, Samuel T.herring

If you attach a metric to something, people will game it.
Every single time.

The moment you measure it, it changes. What used to be playful becomes strategic. What used to be honest becomes optimized. What used to be fun quietly turns into work.

Likes didn’t just measure attention; they reshaped conversations.
Views didn’t just reflect interest; they rewired creativity.
KPIs didn’t just track performance; they taught people what not to care about.

Even rest isn’t safe anymore.
Steps counted. Sleep scored. Focus timed.

Somehow, doing something quietly stopped being enough.

Once a number exists, the question shifts.
Not “Is this meaningful?”
But “Will this perform?”

And people respond exactly as expected. We chase the number. We tweak behavior. We optimize for visibility instead of truth. Eventually, the metric becomes the point, and the original intention fades into the background.

Nothing is wrong with measurement.
But when it becomes the goal, something human gets lost.

Curiosity becomes output.
Joy becomes proof.
Presence becomes performance.

What’s strange is how uncomfortable it now feels to do something that leaves no trace. No likes. No streak. No receipt.

Just the thing itself.

Anyway.
This is just something I noticed
